Happy Spongebob Birthday Adam!

After the task of carving the bat-o-lantern, I proceeded to decorate this Spongebob Squarepants cake. After we decided to have a Spongebob themed party, it dawned on me that it would be pretty easy to make a Spongebob cake, after all, he is square. I tried to find an easy premade one or a transfer on stencil, but I couldn't find anything worthwhile. I was really inspired by this site (scroll down for closeups), but didn't think I could pull off anything that looked as good as those. I fretted about making the cake for a week and planned and practiced drawing out Spongebob beforehand. So here's how I went about it:

  1. Bought the usual Pillsbury Confetti cake mix, a can of white vanilla frosting and a can of chocolate frosting. Had yellow and blue Cakemate tubes on hand and bought some black. Bought a box of Yodels and pretzel rods.
  2. Made a batch of yellow and pink frosting 2 nights before. I was actually trying to get red frosting, but any amount of red food coloring added to white frosting will always be pink. Bought some cool red doodling icing the day before.
  3. That night after work, baked the cake during/after dinner.
  4. Had Doug tape together a cardboard box and wrap in foil.
  5. Took the cake out to cool before the kids went to sleep.
  6. Got the kids to sleep. I think Dova even had a bath that night.
  7. 9pm Carved the pumpkin.
  8. 10pm Started decorating.
  9. I outlined the eyes, nose, mouth and teeth in yellow first.
  10. Frosted the eyes, teeth and shirt white. By the time I did the teeth, I realized that a spatula was not going to provide good enough control so I switched to an artist's paintbrush and used it for all the tight spots.
  11. Frosted the yellow parts.
  12. Frosted the pink tongue.
  13. Frosted the chocolate parts. At this point, it looked like a total mess, but I knew the outlining would clean it up.
  14. Put on the red tie and outlined the tongue and cheek (no pun intended!)
  15. Started outlining the black. I needed Doug's help to "cut" the frosting so I could pull the tube away cleanly.
  16. When I got to the blue eyes, I realized that my tube of blue was all dried up and unusable, so I had to mix up some blue frosting by hand. Just did it in a sandwich baggie. Saved a little blue for the socks.
  17. Started the limbs. Ate a couple of Yodels that "cracked" when cut up.
  18. Frosted Yodels white for the shoulders. Ate more Yodels that were not cut at the right angle.
  19. Frosted the arms and fingers.
  20. Frosted the legs, being sure to get the stripes on the socks correct!
  21. Finally placed the last Yodel foot and looked at the clock: 12:40 am.
  22. Placed a sheet of parchment paper on top to protect it.
  23. Cleaned up and finally hit the hay at 1 am.
So 2 hours and 40 minutes spent entirely on decorating this cake that will be eaten by a mob of kids. When Adam saw it the next morning, he was ecstatic. If I don't say so myself, I think it turned out better than any of those on that site. While I was driving to pick up pizza for the party, I told Adam, "When you become a teenager and you get really mad at Mom, just remember that for your 6th birthday she made you an awesome Spongebob cake." I certainly will remember.

During the party, I got lots of compliments on the cake, brother-in-law Paul said that if I could cut the time in half, I could go into business making them. When it came time to cut it, I just did it robotically without thinking about all that time spent on it. The yodels went first and no one ate the frosted pretzels. Next time (next time?!?!? there will be NO next time!!), I could use some filled pirouette cookies instead. Of course, now Dova is expecting some sort of fantastic cake for her birthday as well.

In terms of the party.. I know there's the rule of invite as many kids as the age, but that would be only 6, and we always have to invite the 2 cousins, and friends Aaryn, Jessica and Nora, so that only leaves one for Adam. So I allowed him to make a list that was under 24 kids so that invites and favors were easy to manage. We invited 23 and did not expect all of them to show. But in the end, almost all of them did, and we had 19(!!!) kids including ours. It was total insanity for 3 hours, but everyone had fun jumping in the moonwalk, playing air hockey, beating the Spongebob pinata, eating the awesome Spongebob cake and opening the huge pile of presents. Next year, "one small present" is definitely going to be written on the invites. There is no need for so much stuff!! As always, I took over a hundred photos here.

Bat-o-lantern

Is it too late for Happy Halloween? We were so behind this year that I didn't even buy this pumpkin until November 1st. Then I didn't carve it until the night before Adam's birthday party, on November 3rd. The day after Halloween last year, I bought a stencil and carving set for half price at Target (around $3 as I recall) and had to wait patiently for a year to try it out. Adam selected the pattern and I carved out this masterpiece. Actually, it was my very first carving, as I always deferred the task to men with knives. Using a carving saw is much more precise, but still quite work intensive. This one took about an hour. Having carved it the night before Adam's party had the added benefit of looking fresh and fantastic for the party. Note to self for next year: Don't pick designs with a hanging piece as that gets soft and flimsy quickly!

Karen on WGBH Morning Stories

Earlier this year, I posted on my sister-in-law Karen's possible appearance on WGBH Morning Stories. In September, I had exchanged a few messages with Tony Kahn when they first joined Flickr and learned that he did interview Karen over the phone. Well, here she is in this podcast. I guess it was well worth jumping into her iTunes and setting up podcasts for her iPod Shuffle. Warning: it is a tear-jerker all-around.

Bertie Bott's Beans - What are they thinking?

I picked up a couple of these Jelly Belly Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans because they were half price at the supermarket. One went to Adam's girlfriend Nellie (one of many), who had a Harry Potter birthday party over the summer. The other we kept at home. Adam, who is a picky eater, simply said he didn't like them. So I tried to pawn them off on Dova, who eats pretty much anything. She would chew one and then spit it into her hand and say "I don't like this kind" and I'd tell her to toss it in the garbage. I was desperate for something sweet a few days ago, so I started raiding them. The first one I tried and said, "Hmm, this tastes like bacon." Doug looked at me like I had two heads. Another day, I had one and it tasted like black pepper. Today, I had one and it was simply putrid. Finally, I looked at the tag and saw the flavors.

Here is the official guide.

The one I spit out was vomit flavor. What the heck are these Jelly Belly people thinking?!?!?! Do some twisted kids actually eat this stuff? Or do they simply use it as gags on other people? There should be BOLD lettering somewhere warning people that these are not flavors that normal people would want to eat!! And poor Nell, to think she probably had a few without realizing her fate. No wonder they were half price. Being frugal does not always pay!!

Where have I been?

This is just an update to let people know that I'm still alive. Obviously, I've been quite busy from having a totally insane birthday party for Adam to taking a trip to California for work. Check out those picture links for now, more detailed posts to follow.

Here are some quick updates to previous posts:

  • Template - After fighting with this darn Blogger template for 2 weeks straight, I think I've finally gotten the better of it. CSS is my friend right? I didn't even know what that acronym meant before I got into this mess (cascading style sheet). My biggest issue was that it was totally screwed up in Internet Exploder. Although I don't personally use IE (see Flock/Firefox below) anymore, the blog still has to be beautiful for it as I except nothing less than perfection. Besides, I am a UI programmer right? What's so hard about making a web page? (I can almost say this now)
  • The Champion - Yes, Adam did manage to plug up the new magic toilet a couple times. Since it is a low flow toilet, the volume of water that gets backed up is not enough to overflow the toilet, so it just sort of dribbles down instead of whooshing. Still better than the old messes that we used to have.
  • Mail2RSS - It finally dawned on me that I could use the good ol' Bloglines email subscriptions to forward my gmail to so I can read it at work (see bottom of left pane if you have bloglines). It is more private and it saves the last 100 so you aren't left in a lurch for any emails that aren't in the last 20.
  • Flock - So after using Flock for a few months, a few of its (lack of) features finally forced me to switch. The things that I really liked about Flock are the Gmail plug-in and the built-in Blogger and Flickr posting. However, it didn't handle owning two blogs well, as a few dreams from geek sleep got posted onto this blog by mistake. The integration of RSS feeds is not really useful as I need to take it from computer to computer and Bloglines works much better for that. The Flickr integration is nice but it is better to just go to Flickr itself. The things about Flock that drove me crazy are the lack of history and the single back button. I'm constantly trying to move a few pages back or to something that I looked up yesterday. So in the end, I switched over to Firefox 2, the backend to Flock. It does have the necessary del.icio.us integration, easy subscribe to Bloglines, tons of history information and built-in spell checking.
I had one more bullet item for an update on the Corvette keys, but I can't remember it right now (even this update post was saved as a draft!).

I voted today

Your Vote Score: 32% Republican, 68% Democrat

While you don't always agree with the Democrat party, it's a pretty good match for you.
Do be sure to research each candidate. A liberal Republican or independent candidate might fit you better at times.

I try to stay away from discussing politics, especially on this blog, but I couldn't resist this one. Plus it is my first timely post in ages. Go vote if you haven't already!
