Idyllic spring weekend

IMG_6319
Finally after winter lasting way too long, we had a beautiful warm spring weekend on April 22nd. The weekend before it was snowing and Quentin brought over sand for the basketball hoop that he kindly gave us and I showed him the ropes on the Wii. We didn't end up using the sand in the hoop base, so I decided to get a sandbox for Dova.

On Saturday, I decided to cut both kids' hair outside on the deck (don't judge my hair cutting abilities by this picture, Adam loves spiky hair and refuses to comb it!). It sounds so idyllic, being outdoors with the family, combing and cutting hair, letting the hair clipping fall anywhere to be picked up by the wind, but don't let that fool you. It was a major battle keeping the kids from being ticklish, squiggling everywhere and running off, being too hot, too cold, too windy, it never ends. After hotdogs for lunch on the deck (we also lugged the grill and all the deck furniture out), we headed out in search of a sandbox. I got about halfway to the stores when I realized I took the wrong car (trying to save gas in the Echo) and needed to go back and get my wagon. Arrggh. Of course we had the typical trials at ToysRUs (I want these Legos, I want these beach toys, I want the crabby sandbox not the froggie one), but I managed to purchase just one item, the least expensive froggie sandbox. Later, we had delicious grilled Trader Joe's Bool Kogi for dinner on the deck amidst the newly awakened mosquitoes.

On Sunday, we filled the sandbox and the kids had a blast. We set up a beach umbrella to shade them from the sun and add to the beach atmosphere. It was all fun until we tried to get them in for lunch. Dova was covered head to toe in sand, and the sand left a white powder all over her and she looked like a ghost. I hate sand in the hair!! Not to mention all the sand that was no longer in the sandbox. OK, we placed it in a not-so-green spot on our lawn (that brown color is pretty accurate), but still, what a mess!

I'm glad to see the play sand was actually used as designed.

I used it as weight in the back of the Jeep for about 3 years, until the bags finally sprung small leaks and began to fill the Jeep with sand.

I guess I didn't have need for a sand-box. (though my shed actually sits in a sandbox I built for the girls many many years ago....it has not been used as such for a long time)
