Curly Hair

Curly-haired doll from Burger King

I instantly fell in love with this curly haired doll that Dova got from Burger King (plus I had a blast setting up this "studio" shot). Her hair is larger than life and full of beautiful curls that I envied as a child with straight straight straight hair. For some reason, girls always want to have something different than what they are born with. My best childhood friend had curly hair and would kill for straight hair. Dova, for some reason, would rather have dark hair like her brother and me rather than her beautiful brown hair with red highlights. At least they are proud of being half Chinese. I was more ambivalent about being Chinese until I was older.

Me with a perm

Back in the eighties when big hair was in, I succumbed to perm mania, which would look simply unnatural nowadays. This photo was from 1989 when I was 22. Of course I picked a flattering picture of myself and not the horrible mugshot I had on my passport (it even scares Doug). I hope big hair never comes back and I am very happy with my straight hair now. Just wish it weren't so gray!

When I was young, I always wanted to shave...to grow a beard.

Well, my dad always told me I would regret that desire. He said I would some day wish I never had to shave again.

Well....I suppose he is right. My head hair isn't gray yet, but the hair of my beard is....so growing one now would make me look way old.

My dad was right after all!

Apparently tonight's fast food schlep will be to Burger King.

And hon, everyone had hair like that in the 80s...yours looks good either way (from the photo here). I have naturally big frizz hair and even I got perms back then. LOL

I agree -- It is funny how every woman wants the opposite of their own hair. Growing up my hair was curly, wavy, wild, and hard to deal with. I would have done anything for straight hair. Now I love it!

And as for the 80s -- Who didn't have a perm? : D

That (the doll) looks like my hair now. Seriously? I channel Gilda Radner.

I used to try and straighten it, but I recently gave up and am just embracing the curl. It makes me stand out here in Stepford so I like it now.

LOL - so true. My hair is just wavy enough to always curl the wrong way, and I always wanted it to be either curly or straight, LOL. :)

And I'm so with you on the gray... :(
