Heat and Other Stories by Joyce Carol Oates

I finished this book last March and it is typical "mainstream" Joyce Carol Oates until I hit the last story. I had listened to one of her gothic stories before, a genre that I don't care for, but from the reviews, this set of short stories looked good. Edgy, sometimes dark, flirting with violence, revealing, always fascinating. Many stories left very strong impressions in my mind, but when I read the last tale, a definite gothic one, I was completely horrified. Amorphous, carnivorous babies? It was awful. It's too bad that was taste that I was left with after reading the book.
