Our little boy Dova

I love this picture because Dova is wearing one of Adam's old shirts and with her new haircut, she looks like a boy. This was in August, her first real bangs trim, and I cut it too short and all jaggedy. Doug said "Don't worry, it'll grow back." I was devastated. After successfully cutting Adam's hair for nearly 4 years, I apparently had no idea how to cut girl's hair. I cut her hair again today, and it worked out much better. Put her in the backpack on the deck and cut it outside. As long as she had the comb (liked the pointy end), she was happy and not too jumpy.

This post reminded me of a strange "custom" that my family does...and I guess my wife and I did as well.

When I was a child, and I received my first hair cut, my parents cut a curl of hair and saved it in a small wax paper bag. To this day, I still have that small curl of hair tucked away in a family photo album.

What is even stranger is that in a similar album, I have a curl of my mothers hair (from like 1929) and even stranger, the full extent of both her braided ponytails from when she received communion. (now I have pictures of her braids reaching down to her knees, and the hair cuttings I still have are about that long)

This "custom" was obviously not from my fathers family because I have none of his hair.

Could this be a Portugese thing? (my mom was 100%...my dad only 50% and 50% Irish)

It is sort of fun to compare the different hair textures and colors....but has anyone ever heard of other people (normal people) doing this sort of thing?

What's up with that?
